Our Mission & Vision

The Mission of The BioCollective is to change the face of formulation by sharpening the focus on ingredient transparency and restoring the microbiome’s internal pharmacy through advanced modeling, analysis and the market’s first function driven probiotic formulations.

We aim to unlock a new degree of understanding and product development processes
from the core of the human ecosystem: the microbiome.

In 2015 The BioCollective was founded.

The initiative then, as it is now, is a focus on the microbiome as a map to health and disease prevention and correction.

The BioCollective began metagenomic sequencing of a scope and quality of microbiome samples that had never before
been endeavored.

Joins the "National Microbiome Initiative" and presents at the White House

The Team

Martha Carlin,
Founder & Chief executive revolutionary

Martha has the unique ability to connect seemingly unrelated things to solve problems in new ways. Her study of genetics, nutrition, biology, chemistry, neuroscience and epigenetics began in 2002 when her husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Martha saw the gut’s connection to chronic disease after reading Dr. Martin Blaser’s Missing Microbes in 2014, later connecting it to Dr. Filip Scheperjans’ research on the microbiome and PD. She is a seasoned and successful executive, a systems thinker, and a creative problem solver. Martha is an investor in We Are Curious, a personal health data management and discovery platform and in Pure Cultures, an agricultural probiotics technology company. They say revolutionaries are known to overthrow old ways of thinking - and Martha does this in her sleep.

Dr. Raul Cano, PhD
Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Cano’s microbiology career spans for more than 50 years, with extensive experience both in biotechnology and academia. Dr. Cano specializes in molecular and environmental microbiology. He is best known for his groundbreaking work in paleomicrobiology and metagenomics. His current interest focuses in metagenomics and comparative metabolomics, as well as developing standard procedures of microbiome research. His Ph.D. in microbiology was granted by the University of Montana. Dr. Cano also holds advanced degrees in Genetics and Clinical Microbiology. He has been awarded over a dozen awards, including the prestigious Carski Award, written numerous peer-reviewed publications as well as several textbooks and laboratory procedures manuals. Dr. Cano has served as scientific consultant to several biotechnology firms, and has been elected fellow to the American Academy of Microbiology.

Dr. Naseer Sangwan, PhD
Director of Bioinformatics

Dr. Sangwan received his B.S., and M.S. in Zoology, and Ph.D in Molecular Microbiology from The University of Delhi, in addition to completing two post docs at The Argonne National Library and The University of Chicago, respectively. He has advanced experience in analyzing the effect of natural selection across microbial community ecology and has authored over 45 publications and book chapters on microbial bioremediation potential, genomics, and metagenomics.

Amelia Eudailey
Director of Marketing & Operations

Amelia received her B.S. and M.S. in Developmental Biology from The University of Denver (DU). While at DU, her research focused on neurodegenerative disease and the dynamics of cell-to-cell adhesion proteins during embryonic development. After making the decision to transition away from laboratory research, Amelia applied her scientific way of thinking to overhaul and evaluate operational processes for start up companies. Amelia also brings expertise in product management, marketing, and content creation for scientific audiences.

Zoe Zreloff
Microbiology Research Assistant

Zoe Zreloff earned her B.S. in Microbiology from Colorado State University, where she also worked in a BSL-3 lab researching Tuberculosis. Additionally during her time at CSU, Zoe completed a minor in Biomedical Sciences and conducted a research project with the Department of Neurosciences. Zoe loves to travel and was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to study abroad in Italy for a semester. In her free time, Zoe likes to garden, paint, and go hiking. Zoe is passionate about her work at The BioCollective, handling laboratory tasks ranging from sample processing, data management, and lab quality control, to conducting research experiments and strain isolation work.
